Increases the Value of Your Home
TimberTech not only adds value to your life, it helps to add value to your home. This is a similar or better return on investment than projects such as bathroom addition, bathroom remodel and major kitchen remodel. To maximize your return, Realty Times suggests using a non-rectangle design, and making your deck an extension of your living space.
*Based on a 16′ x 20′ deck set in simple linear pattern; using pressure-treated joists supported by 4x4 posts anchored to concrete piers; built-in bench and planter of the same decking material; stairs, assuming three steps to grade; complete railing using a matching system made of the same composite as the decking material.

In this article, we pit TimberTech products against the competition to see who comes out victorious in a composite decking comparison. Read on to see the results for yourself.
The truth is, not all capped composite and capped polymer decks are created equal. In fact, our leading competitors would like you to believe that their products and ours encounter the same problems over time — but that’s just not true.
Since our founding, TimberTech® has been working to make sure homeowners — and the contractors and dealers that homeowners trust — know that the problems that plague our competitors do not plague us. In fact, TimberTech boards are scientifically engineered to repel mold, resist weathering, and combat warping caused by environmental stressors at a level that can’t be beaten.
Below we set the record straight. See the TimberTech Advantage for yourself.
Composite Decking Comparison: Whose Boards Are Most Durable?
4-Sided Capped Board
Capped polymer and 4-sided capped composite decking provide homeowners with a great alternative to traditional composite and wood decks that are susceptible to mold and mildew.[3-sided Capped Composite Decking]
3-Sided Capped Board
Some competitors only offer 3-sided capped composite boards, which leave a full side of their boards (that are full of wood particles) exposed to the elements.
TimberTech AZEK® Decking
Our TimberTech AZEK decking is comprised of an advanced polymer blend at the core and high-performance polymer caps. There are no wood particles in the core or cap of these boards, making them majorly resistant to mold, mildew, or other moisture damage. Plus, our proprietary Alloy Armour Technology® in the board cap protects against fading and weathering in a way that competitors can’t replicate. When it comes to making a composite decking comparison, the truth is: there’s no comparison.
TimberTech PRO® Decking
The cap on our composite boards in this line contains zero organic materials and boasts proprietary Mold Guard™ Technology for unrivaled moisture protection. Our boards are protected on all four sides, including the backside and in the grooves. With our TimberTech PRO decking line, we don’t cut corners — we cover them.
Competitive Composite Decking
Competitors use a mix of mineral fillers and composite materials in their core, which makes the deck boards susceptible to moisture, plus the mold and mildew growth that comes from exposing organic materials to the elements. What’s more, competitors’ boards are often only protected on three sides, which leaves the bottom and grooves of the board exposed to moisture.
Composite Decking Comparison: Who Has the Best Tech?
TimberTech AZEK Decking
When lab-tested, a composite decking comparison shows that TimberTech AZEK decking proves to be up to 30 degrees cooler than competitive composite decking products. Also, TimberTech AZEK boasts up to 40% better slip resistance than leading competitors thanks to superior traction. Finally, because TimberTech AZEK decking comes with an industry-leading Lifetime Limited Warranty, it doesn’t require costly upkeep — giving you time back to enjoy your deck, not maintain it.
TimberTech PRO Decking
Forget annual time-consuming and costly sanding, sealing, and staining with the capped composite decking of the TimberTech PRO line. The only maintenance required to keep your deck looking great is an occasional cleaning with TimberTech DeckCleaner™.
Competitive Composite Decking
In internal tests, competitors’ products offered less slip resistance than TimberTech AZEK decking and were warmer to the touch than TimberTech AZEK decks, even when compared with lighter deck colors.
Composite Decking Comparison: Who Has the Best Color Options?
TimberTech AZEK Decking
Ranging from monochromatic to color-blended hues, the gorgeous decking options from the Vintage, Arbor, and Harvest Collections offer nuanced wood grain patterns and even wire-brushed finishes. Plus, with Alloy Armour Technology® in the cap, your deck colors are protected against fading and weathering.
TimberTech PRO Decking
Boards in the Legacy, Reserve, and Terrain Collections feature a hand-scraped finish and natural wood shades designed to retain color — so your deck looks beautiful initially and over time. Proven in third-party lab testing, TimberTech boards resist weathering much better than leading competitors.
Competitive Composite Decking
Competitors offer limited color choices — if you do a composite decking comparison, you’ll find considerably fewer options than our 30-plus colors — and use standard streaking technology and woodgrain patterns, which narrow the design possibilities and fabricate an artificial wood look.
Composite Decking Comparison: Which Boards Are Easiest to Install?
TimberTech AZEK and PRO Decking
Both TimberTech AZEK and PRO decking lines offer sturdy metal fastening options so you can choose to blend, conceal, or completely hide all hardware. Plus, TimberTech AZEK decking is up to 30% lighter than leading competitive composite products and requires no pre-drilling — making installation a breeze by permitting countersinking with no surface distortion or cracking.
Competitive Composite Decking
Fastener options are limited and often create large gaps between the boards, exposing hardware and affecting aesthetics.
Composite Decking Comparison: Which Boards Fight Stains the Best?
TimberTech AZEK Decking
It’s time that your deck keeps up with your lifestyle. Backed by a 50-Year Fade & Stain Warranty and Alloy Armour Technology® caps, you can rest easy knowing TimberTech AZEK deck boards promise a beautiful, natural look that stays gorgeous for decades to come.
TimberTech PRO Decking
Covered by Mold Guard™ Technology in the cap, TimberTech PRO decking keeps mold and moisture damage out. Formulated to combat fading and tested against aggressive wine and condiment spills, this decking line ensures you don’t have to worry. Our industry-leading 30-Year Fade & Stain Warranty can back that up.
Competitive Composite Decking
Most competitors only offer a standard 25-year stain and fade warranty, limiting the integrity of the product against stains and other environmental factors.
Composite Decking Comparison: Which Boards Are Best for the Environment?
TimberTech AZEK and PRO Decking
Composed of up to 54% recycled material, TimberTech AZEK decking never fells any trees in the manufacturing process. TimberTech PRO board cores are comprised of up to 80% recycled wood particles and recycled polyethylene, all protected by a four-sided cap. All wood and plastic in the core of our capped composite boards is 100% recycled. We’re making strides to produce products out of the highest percentage of recycled content without compromising the integrity of the product. Check out some of the ways we’re prioritizing sustainability:
Up to 98% of our internal scrap is reused.
290 million pounds of waste and scrap was diverted from landfills in 2019.
Our closed-loop water filtration system recycles up to 96% of the water used annually.
Since 2015, we’ve saved 1 million trees.
Competitive Composite Decking
Competitors use recyclable materials both in the core and cap, which could compromise performance if not processed and formulated correctly. Without a moisture-impervious, 100% PVC cap on composite deck boards, mold and mildew are more likely to grow — meaning the deck will have to be replaced more often. That’s not exactly sustainable.
Composite Decking Comparison: Who Has the Best Warranties?
TimberTech AZEK Decking
Backed by the industry’s best warranty of Lifetime Limited Warranty and a 50-Year Fade & Stain Warranty (double what leading competitors offer), TimberTech AZEK decking will stay beautiful for generations.
TimberTech PRO Decking
Protected by both a 30-Year Limited Warranty and a 30-Year Fade & Stain Warranty, TimberTech PRO decking offers warranties that beat every competitor — by five or more years.
Competitive Composite Decking
Competitors only offer a standard 25-year warranty for both product and fade and stain, limiting the duration of a deck’s beauty and your enjoyment.
Even though leading competitors would like you to believe old decking myths, it’s clear when you do a composite decking comparison: not all decking is created equally. Creating an outstanding outdoor living space is more than building an Instagram-worthy deck — although we do that, too. With TimberTech composite decking, we use technological advances to protect your outdoor living investments. That’s why it’s called the TimberTech Advantage.

Antique Leather and Dark Roast
Coast to coast, more and more homeowners are recognizing the benefits of composite decking over traditional wood. Some outdoor living enthusiasts are drawn to the low maintenance and high value of composite decking; for others, the enduring beauty of the color-rich boards wins them over. When it comes to deciding on the right building material for your backyard escape, TimberTech® decking products offer serious advantages — meaning traditional wood and competitors’ products just can’t compete.
Continue reading for a quick refresher on the composite decking category, then check out our top nine benefits of composite decking.
What Is Composite Decking?
Composite decking is the fastest-growing wood decking alternative on the market. Composite deck boards will involve a core and a cap, which makes them resistant to moisture, weathering, and fading. Unlike wood, capped composite and capped polymer boards leverage high-performance recycled materials and innovative technology for protection.
Benefits of Composite Decking
1. Materials Science That Prevents Weathering, Warping, Splintering, or Fading
TimberTech capped composite and capped polymer deck boards are much less susceptible to the erosion, bleaching, and overall degeneration that traditional wood undergoes when exposed to the great outdoors. Our protective polymer capping and innovative materials science combine to keep colors vibrant, moisture out, and structural integrity intact.

2. Industry-Leading Warranties
At TimberTech, we believe in decks that can stand the test of time — that’s why we’re leading the industry in not only gorgeous composite decking products, but our commitment to their premium performance. In fact, we’re so confident in our composite decking that we offer industry-leading warranties, including our industry-best 50-Year Limited Fade & Stain Warranty and industry-leading Lifetime Limited Warranty for our TimberTech® AZEK® decking line. Check out the warranties and technology innovation for each of our three lines:
With TimberTech, you can enjoy an inviting, color-rich deck that is just as beautiful decades later as it was on day one.

Backed by a 25-Year Limited Product Warranty and our 25-Year Fade & Stain Warranty.
3. Protective Capping That Prevents Mold & Mildew
For many homeowners, one of the primary benefits of composite decking is the security provided by the protective caps. Our leading competitor only caps part of the deck board, leaving the composite core open to invasion by mold and mildew. Our TimberTech PRO® decking line is capped on all four sides to offer superior protection against moisture, and even boasts Mold Guard™ Technology to keep mold and moisture damage out. Just look at our scalloped-profile deck board in the Terrain Collection™ — our premium-performance cap extends along every groove, edge, and corner.
A bisection of a Silver Maple scalloped-profile deck board from the Terrain Collection™ of the TimberTech PRO line. Note that the high-performance polymer cap gets in the grooves to banish moisture and protect your investment.
4. Low Maintenance
Traditional wood decks need to be maintained at least every three years and replaced every 10 to 15 years — a labor-intensive (and costly) process. You will need to power-wash and stain a traditional wood deck as well. When it comes to durability, wood just doesn’t compare to composite decking. TimberTech deck boards never need sanding, staining, or sealing to maintain their gorgeous color. For the removal of dirt, dust, or pollen, these fuss-free product lines need only spot treatment or a light washing with TimberTech® DeckCleaner™.
5. High Value
Although the initial cost of a composite deck can be higher than that of a wood deck, once you factor in the savings on maintenance (such as staining and replacement expenses), a composite deck can end up paying for itself in a matter of years. The long-term cost savings is another one of the benefits of composite decking.
Costs Over 10 Years
Ipe Premium Hardwood vs. AZEK Vintage Boards
The estimated average cost of composite deck boards and pressure-treated lumber decking costs are based on the national average for a 16’ x 20’ deck over a 10-year period. Meant for visual representation only. Actual costs may vary.
6. Aesthetic Variety That Doesn’t Sacrifice Performance
Traditional wood has different hardness rankings and responds to its environment differently based on the species of lumber used. That means that you may have to sacrifice the look you want to account for the softness and/or variability of the material. Not so with TimberTech — one of the many benefits of composite decking is the option to let your unique style shine through without having to worry about performance or limitation. With TimberTech, design’s the limit.
7. All the Beauty of Traditional Wood
The three lines in our decking portfolio — TimberTech AZEK, TimberTech PRO, and TimberTech EDGE™ — offer a variety of grain patterns and color options to capture all the nuanced beauty of traditional wood, but without the wear and tear. Wood grains range from cathedral and straight patterns to dual-embossed wood grains to hand-scraped and infinitely variable finishes. Colors can be monochromatic in nature — for homeowners looking for an opaque or painted wood finish — or color-blended for a realistic look that’s just as beautiful when seen up close as it is from afar.
No, seriously — check out this example:
8. Saves You Time and Labor
Another one of the benefits of composite decking is that it requires no hands-and-knees scrubbing, staining, or regular replacement. Owners of traditional wood decks don’t only get an outdoor living space when they build with wood — they’re also saddled with a labor-intensive, costly project that returns every so many years. At TimberTech, we believe you should spend your time enjoying your deck, not maintaining it.Type your paragraph here.

SCRANTON, PA. (Aug. 27, 8:30 p.m. ET) — CPG International Inc., the parent company of Azek Building Products Inc., will buy TimberTech Ltd., a major producer of wood-plastic composites, from Crane Group.
Azek is a Scranton-based maker of decking, railing and trim boards.
CPG International issued an Aug. 27 announcement that it has signed a definitive agreement to buy TimberTech. Terms were not disclosed. Officials of TimberTech told employees at its factory in Wilmington, Ohio, about the pending deal on Aug. 24.
The CPG news release says nothing about the Wilmington plant, and officials were not immediately available for further comment. TimberTech CEO Stu Kemper did not return a call seeking comment.
The Wilmington News Journal quoted TimberTech’s chief operating officer, Tom Gramlich, as saying it’s “business as usual” at the factory, which employs 220.
TimberTech is one of the pioneers of WPC decking, which combine wood-flour and plastic to make a natural-looking, long-lasting deck. Columbus, Ohio-based Crane Group shipped its first TimberTech decking in 1997. TimberTech also makes railing to go with the decking systems.
Eric Jungbluth, the CEO of CPG International, said the acquisition will help both companies.
“The ultimate goal is for our Azek business and TimberTech to join forces,” Jungbluth said in the news release. “We believe this powerful combination will not only create the largest manufacturer in the trim, decking and railing market, but will also create a premier company in the industry as both entities manufacture highly engineered, outdoor living-solution products that offer exceptional aesthetics, performance and longevity.”. from plastinews.com
